Democracy goes back till at least 500 or so BC. For most of the years after Democracy had been invented things where also pretty bad. And the improvement since then has more to do with technology, engineering, increasing trade and specialization, and the accumulation of capital, than it has to do with democracy.

None of which should be considered a slam on democracy. I'd rather live in a country that gets to vote for its leadership then in a dictatorship. But democracy is hardly responsible for everything good since the idea first was invented or practiced.
