You need a history lesson.

The ancient Greeks came up with the idea of democracy, but it was very crude. Then as they were destroyed we lost it for the next 1,500 years.

It started coming back with the magna Carta, but it was our county that finally did it full monty.

It was a combination of democracy and the empirical method which allowed scientists to give us the age of enlightenment.

Before democracy the church tortured people who said things they didn't like.

It was called heresy.
