Coyotes are afraid of humans, though they have been known to scoop up the occasional small pet left unattended in a back yard. I don't recall reading any credible accounts of any attacks on humans in the Chicago area.

I heard my local coyotes howling after dark a couple of years ago. I think they may of caught something. It was a very disturbing sound. I was walking Harris at the time and he turned to look at me with a "What the hell!" expression on his face. We reversed course.
