J,

I dunno how Netscape does mail, but I think most use One Big File to hold all messages (i.e. MS Exchange uses a .PST file for this). In some cases, attachments are automatically put in the \Windows\Temp directory, which can be a problem if you have a glut of .TMP files in there too, as the .TMP files are often the first ones to get cross-linked in case of a disk error. The attachment in question might be cross-linked to a .TMP file, causing the problem that you note.

R did get back to me on the TY situation:

The oversight was brought to our attention by one of our
subscribers. It seems Tri-Continental pays, in addition to their
standard dividend, a year-end capital gains distribution of $2.64/share,
which would have to be payed if you were short, killing the profit
reaped from the "overvalued" puts.

OK, so the dividend problem is clear enough, although I don't understand why taht would affect the price of the puts, unless the payout always affects the market price of the stock.
