Ignore "wasted bytes". Just move as much as possible/desirable to trash folder, and click "empty trash folder". Do not click "compress" anything first. Could do it later, if need be.

You can also save mail files to a 3 1/2, or Zip disk, if you have one and have strong sentimental attachment to old mail. Another possibility is to buy and install one more hard drive.
