I don't think it is fiction but neither do I think it is "just around the corner". Today, it is still fiction.

The most important thing that will get in the way of it is the death of economic progress, because technological advances take money and when half the people in the "economic powerhouse" of the world aren't working anymore, it is pretty hard to have a growing economy.
