Ranking the high end imaging phones: Part I (DxO Mark) ...
I. Overview
DxOMark is an independent camera and lens testing laboratory for leading photography press publications and websites including Digital Photography Review's DPConnect website which is dedicated to the technology, community and culture of 'mobile photography’. In October 2012 DxOMark started comprehensive testing and publication of camera-embedded smartphone and tablet measurement and rating results for still photo and video imaging. They published their 1st cameraphone test results in late November for the Apple iPhone 4 and since have tested 15 other models. Below are their latest rankings followed by their August rankings before they tested the new iPhone 5S and Nokia Lumia 1020. The cameraphones are ranked by their overall composite score for still photo imaging and video imaging. After the graphic below the composite rankings are broken down into its still and video components.

It should be noted that DxOMark has not yet published test results for several new high end cameraphones including the Google Motorola Moto X, the Sony Xperia Z1, and the LG G2. In addition the the published test results have never been update to account for upgraded software in the tested devices. Nokia's recent GDR2 Amber update (e.g.) considerably improved the IQ of the Lumia 920 for both still and video. The GDR 3 update for the Lumia 1020 will likely improve its IQ ratings for both still and particularly video. As DxO notes:
"The Nokia Lumia 1020 comes fourth overall, behind the rival Samsung Galaxy S4 and Apple iPhone 5S but a closer look at the scores reveals the Lumia, in fact, ranks in second place for stills with a score of 79 points (just two points behind its sibling). What is somewhat disappointing is the camera sits in a lowly 12th place for video, which obviously pulls the Lumia 1020 down in the overall rankings." While Digital Phography Review's DPConnect utilizes DxOMark ratings their own rankings differ. Their overall composite rating (8.8/10) for Nokia's Lumia 1020 is second only to the Nokia 808 PureView's (8.9/10) while the Apple 5S scores an (8.1/10) narrowly outpointing Samsung's Galaxy S4 which was rated 8.0/10.
Part II of 'Ranking the high end imaging phones' will be threaded back to this post and will abstract DPConnect's rankings. I'll also provide embedded links to both DxOMark's and DPConnect's reviews of the top imaging phones they have reviewed and rated.
