Land of opportunity: Almost 93% of all new millionaires worldwide in the last year were Americans According to a new study by Credit Suisse ( reported here by CNBC), the US was the world leader in creating new millionaires over the last year, and it wasn’t even close (see table above). Amazingly, the 1.68 million Americans that became new millionaires in the last year represented almost 93% of the 1.81 total number of new millionaires created across the entire globe. It’s an impressive testament to the dynamism of the US economy that we have only 4% of the world’s population, but created 92.7% of all new millionaires in the last year. As much as we hear about a disappearing middle class, stagnating incomes, and declining opportunities for upward mobility in America, the millionaire data from Credit Suisse seem to be telling a different story of a dynamic economy with significant income mobility that is minting new millionaires at a faster pace than anyplace else on the planet. Over the last year, the US created 4,600 new millionaires every day, 192 every hour and 3.2 every minute – that sure seems like a lot of upward mobility in the “land of opportunity.” Based on the Credit Suisse report, there’s no place on the planet that creates more millionaires – in absolute terms and per capita – than the United States of America.
