What a great experience for all involved. Living where I do, I have camped several times in the rain, but have taken it a step further. We always bring a large tarp..........20 x 16 or bigger....... and plenty of cord. One of the first things we do when we reach our site is to string that tarp over our camp area. We make sure one end of the tarp is slightly lower than the rest, so the water has a path away from our site. We also always bring a folding shovel, and have had to dig ditches to redirect the water away from the central fire pit. Of course we bring rain gear and plenty of warm clothing. I have a small clothes rack I use to dry wet clothing that we set near the fire. We just turn it once in awhile so all of the clothing is exposed to the fire. We glean wood from the surrounding area to supplement what wood we bring from home. We have had wonderful experiences camping in the rain, but it takes a little forethought to make sure we're comfortable and dry.

You might want to invest in one of these if you're going to make a habit of tent camping.
