Manipulating the masses with religious solutions for the age old fear of death, afterlife & freedom from earthly pain ,that was well known way back before 300bc. Studied well by the Greeks & later Romans as Alexander marched across Egypt, Turkey, Palestine, thru to India. The Greeks were very happy to lend their libraries to the Hebrews, allow them to pen out their Bible. (Once you understand what the beliefs are, you've an idea on how to deal with them)
Also in almost every case of large battles that ravaged on, you find with Islam & Christianity reliance on the exhortations of the priests to enthrall soldiers to fight to the death, the rewards offered were obvious, if not imaginary. If you fought well, you would leave a good legacy to your family & heirs, bring in the priests and better still have your sons become monks/priests in training. (where the knowledge was)
