Look to me like that great idea of all-soft buttons on the Nexus is coming to Windows Phone; plus this will allow dual-boot phones.

Rumor: Microsoft Planning To Allow OEMs To Build Windows Phone Devices With Onscreen Buttons

There was a strange report that emerged that week that Microsoft is planning to remove the hardware back button from its hardware spec for Windows Phone OEMs. Lots of developer opposed to this Microsoft’s alleged plan and even some consumers who knows how the back button works on Windows Phone devices raised their voice on it. Today, The Verge reported that Microsoft is indeed planning to remove hardware back button from spec for OEMs, but they need to replace it with onscreen back button. Many leading Android devices have completely replaced hardware capacitive buttons with onscreen buttons.

There will be a black bar at the bottom the screen which will host the current hardware buttons such as Start key, back key and search key. The Verge reports that the main reason behind this change is to allow mobile operators who typically license reference designs from Qualcomm and create low-cost devices. I really don’t understand how adding three buttons in the bottom of the device will complicate phone design. Anyways, let us hope more OEMs jump to Windows Phone platform from these relaxed hardware specs.
