Do you think the Democrats really wanted a 3-month reopening of government and extension of the debt ceiling?

Sequestration has been tremendously successful, cutting a substantial sum out of the budget and saving new debt, with no downside, whatsoever. To the extent Republicans can force a more rational application of the next round that's probably a good thing, though.
