At best "pumping" works to keep the lows from being as low, it doesn't create ongoing growth. The recovery has been very weak but we've been out of the recession for awhile now. Attempting to boost the economy with huge deficits and increased government spending, isn't helpful anymore (if it ever was).

OTOH I agree with you in the short term balanced budgets are unrealistic politically, and even if it could be done the sudden shift would cause short term harm.

The short term harm might be worth it if it was required for long term fiscal sanity but the harm might move voters even further away from supporting long term spending and deficit cuts.
