I don't think it is fiction but neither do I think it is "just around the corner". Today, it is still fiction. The most important thing that will get in the way of it is the death of economic progress, because technological advances take money and when half the people in the "economic powerhouse" of the world aren't working anymore, it is pretty hard to have a growing economy.
We are not smart enough to program a device/computer with the random, illogical and stupid shit that is at the heart of man's creative brilliance.

A computer will never come up with the concept that governments derive their power from the people and that the role of government is to protect the natural rights of individuals. Koan's beloved human singularity would design a society that mirrors that of ants or bees. The fact that a computer can do calculations many trillions of times faster than humans does not equate to intelligence. There is a difference between programming a computer to beat any human being in chess and knowing that sometimes the best way to help a person is to do nothing and let them hit bottom so that they can help themselves.

The movie "The Matrix" touched on the problem with replicating true human intelligence. When the machines tried to program the coppertops with conscious perception of a utopian existence, the coppertops (humans) would self terminate. That gives an idea where we will fail in recreating human intelligence. We will try avoid including our obvious flaws. How do you program a machine to be self destructive right up to the point that it reaches a moment of clarity and reverses the self destructive behavior based on the epiphany that was reached?

Human intelligence is based on far more than the ability to make connections and do calculations. And all attempts to create the human singularity will fail.
