it is totally obscene that a visit to an Emergency department is likely to cost more than what a working person is able to earn in a month. And it's not just predatory billing. Hospitals make a profit, but they are not rolling in money. Their costs are high. The question is - WHY.

This is actually the high cost segment of health care that Obamacare is supposed to solve. The theory goes that all the millions of currently uninsured people go to the emergency room when they have major issues rather than see the doctor regularly and catch the problem in it's infancy. Catching cancer A when it is just beginning costs $1 to treat and you get to live, catching it a year later when it is killing you costs $10 to treat, and the treatment probably doesn't even work. So....if all these currently uninsured people go to the doctor regularly (using their subsidized insurance plan) and it costs $1 to nip something in the bud before it gets going, they won't be going to the emergency room 6 months later and costing $10 to treat the same ailment which has progressed.

It's a lovely theory. I don't know if there is a speck of evidence to support the theory, but it sounds lovely.
