There would be some hope if the republican politicians had some nads. Even small nads would get us there. But they are worried that they will be blamed for the default. It's obvious that they aren't able to articulate that enforcing responsible spending policies is their job. So when some democrat tries to blame them for the default, they not only don't have a response, they also wouldn't understand or believe in the response if they gave it. Since they don't have the conviction that comes from belief and understanding of their role and the role of the federal government in general, we really should never have expected anything but a surrender.

The progressives know what their role is. They have long term goals and short term goals and they know what they are supposed to do to get there.

If you walk up to a poker table and you can't spot the fish, you're the fish. The republican politicians don't even know that they sat down at a poker table.
