The economy is always in a state of panic.

You obviously forgot about the Panics of 1792, 1796, 1819 and 1825.

The Panic of 1857 and 1873 was a direct result of the above panics and led to the following ones.

The Panic of 1884 and the ensuing Panic of 1890 plus the unforgettable Panic of 1893.

This was followed by the Panic of 1896 and led to the Panic of 1901 and the panic of Panics in 1907 and of course the 1910–1911 Panic.

Which all led to the Great Depression and Great Recession we are reeling from today.
