One of the interesting things about this whole effort is the different way the 2016 Republican presidential hopefuls played it. Rubio is in even deeper trouble than before, with the base. Rand Paul is trying to have his cake and eat it, too, but is most likely, as you say, to be pinned in his past statements--opposition, for instance, to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. And so on.

The only clear winner from the perspective of the Republican very right wing base is Ted Cruz. He's a clear winner of the Iowa caucuses right now.
