I agree he will be remembered in the short term for being one of the 18 - but 2016 or 2020 is long enough away no one will give a squat as to how he voted by then.

As to that middle 51%; It is convenient to spurn the results of polls - when we don't agree with them. Do you agree with the polls that suggested the republicans were taking a big hit because of their stance against Obamacare and shutting down the government? So the left cheers polls they agree with and pretend polls are meaningless when they don't agree with the results. Same of course for republicans.

My take away from that 51% middle ground was not where the people differed but in commonality. For instance they were against immigration reform - that surprised me a lot! Other commonalities is their social libertarian streak and their position on the size of government/spending by government. Those didn't surprise me and they are issues that could get Rand a sizable chunk of the middle AND the 28% solid conservative bunch.
