Did you or did you not agree with the poll showing republicans were taking a big hit because of their role in shutting down the government? Was that not discussed endlessly among the people here? Do you even remember who was doing those polls?

Gallup and NBC were the two most prominent. And the questions in each were clear. The only grounds for arguing would be sampling--cellphones and so on. I suspected at the time that would only have made matters worse for the Reps.

But my summary statement is that one should not generalize to presidential candidate support from the mixed bag of boxes in the "middle." That, however, is clearly a problem for any polling attempt to use multiple questions to then create the usual "mutually exclusive categories."
