Well you could have a situation where the debt ceiling wasn't increased and then Obama decided not to prioritize debt payments. I don't think he'd make that decision, but its a small possibility.

OTOH continuing to pile on the debt (or even extra spending with taxes to cover it, as your using up the potential revenue while not decreasing the deficit in the short run, or getting entitlements under control for the long run) is a worse problem at least when you consider the most likely actions rather than off the wall ones like not prioritizing debt payments over ordinary spending.
