There can be a case made that even with conservatives winning the Whitehouse, and both houses of congress the pain will be felt and although improvements are made the pain of belt tightening will cause the votes then to flow into those who promise candy.

I think that more than a case can be made. There is absolutely going to be pain. Junkies don't get to avoid the pain of withdrawals just because they quit before the OD'd. They get all of the pain associated with the withdrawal, but they don't die.

There are other parallels....
setting a broken bone hurts, but if you don't do it....
cutting the apron strings of an adult child hurts, but if you don't......

Reducing spending will cause pain. There's no way to avoid it after 60+ years of irresponsible fiscal policy.

Nobody wants to make the adult decision because, as we saw these past couple of weeks, whoever does the responsible thing will be blamed for all of the pain that is really the result of the government's 60 year, ever expanding financial pyramid.
