Global Village Enthusiastically Supports ITU 56K Technology Decision
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1997--Neil Selvin, president and CEO of Global Village Communication, a developer of 56K modems for the Windows and Macintosh markets, applauded the recent International Telecommunications Union (ITU) meeting that resulted in a decision that will create a standard for 56K technology early next year.
''We are extremely pleased that the ITU committee has reached a compromise between the two competing 56K technologies. This is good news for consumers since this will take the confusion out of 56K modem technology and ensure an upgrade path so that 56K modems will be interoperable. With the standard in sight, there is no longer any reason to wait to buy the fastest technology available to access the Internet.''
Unlike some other modem manufacturers that shipped 56K products to market prematurely, Global Village shipped all of its 56K desktop and PC card modems for Windows and Macintosh with software upgradable digital signal processors (DSPs) so that customers will be able to upgrade when the ITU standard is determined and approved in 1998.
''Because we designed our products to be flexible and upgradable, our customers will be able to easily upgrade free of charge,'' said Selvin. Global Village anticipates having the upgrade ready in early 1998 and it will be downloadable from the company's website.
