You think there aren't any nut jobs in the Democratic party? That would be wrong, there are nut jobs everywhere. You can't point to a prominent Democratic nut job because nut jobs don't become prominent in the Democratic party. Didn't used to be true and that was a tough lesson to learn. I will grant you that the Republican party has always attracted a less introspective type of loon. Which is why Buckley cleaned house. But, post-Nixon the Republican leadership decided to let them back in. And then under old 666, the loons started their rise to prominence. Now the inmates run the asylum.
