It's a very good explanation for the problems, but not so great about solutions. Communism fails. It always fails. Human nature being what it is, communism doesn't work- except in small religious groups, and dedicated communes- and even there, it often fails eventually, as it requires a religious commitment. Capitalism only requires greed, and being inured to the suffering of others- so it's easy to see its appeal to some people. For the rest of us, the vast majority of us, we need a hybrid. Because pure capitalism will leave you exposed to the tragedies of excess, and let the weakest bear the brunt of the popping bubbles caused by the excesses of the most powerful and most wealthy. I'm not a fan of the state running everything, though, because eventually the most powerful and most wealthy just find a way to control the state- and then the pops are even worse- and, as in the case of the USSR, implode whole countries.
What we need, imo, are powerful forces for labor to counter the powerful forces of capital, and out of the clash of these two titans, we will see a reasonable system emerge. It will not be perfect, but it will be better. We have seen it before. At times when labor was powerful and taxes were high, thereby diminishing inequality, times were relatively good. Consumers have money to spend, and thus the economy can chug on. This middle road is the way to go. The middle road is always always the way to go. You don't want a communist, and you don't want an Ayniac- you want a middle way that doesn't require a religious adherence to beliefs that make little sense in the real world. You want a mixture, a hybrid, a modest proposal :-) |
