Conference Calls - How do you listen?

Hi all, it's been a long time since I posted here - but was hoping to pick up some perspectives on how folks listen to conference calls - particularly aspects beyond the reported numbers. I couldn't really find an appropriate forum for this, but hope it sortof fits here. The angle on this is trying to get behind the concept of "management that you trust."

Things like:
- Is management shooting straight, or are they just spinning the agreed upon narrative? (A company I used to work for always had a tightly orchestrated and tight-lipped call that I often listened to cynically because of my closeness to the challenges that seemed to be routinely glossed-over).
- Do you think you can get a gauge for the integrity of management from the call? Or am I just fooling myself by trying to read more into it than "just being a 'show' for the investors"?
- Some calls seem to have CEO's and other mgmt that truly makes an effort to help the investor understand the challenges. Other calls seem to go out of their way to avoid doing so - as if addressing certain challenges, difficulties, and uncertainties is prohibited. Are they just being overly cautious in the call or is it a red flag - or just a company culture thing?
- Other thoughts along these lines? I guess basically on some calls I get the feeling I trust the mgmt, and on other calls something just doesn't feel right. On some calls I distinctly dislike the tone of mgmt (even though results look good). Is there much value in this "gut" reaction to the calls or is just mostly to be ignored?

Appreciate any thoughts on this. I've done some web searches to look for other discussions of this issue, but couldn't find much. Thanks again,
