You may be right about the raiding of SS regarding the shortfall aspect. It would definitely be in better shape if they had no raided those funds. My opinion is that SS could have been run as a true insurance plan and the bulk of ones money could have gone into 401k type plans. Every year, I get my report from SS on how much, I put into SS. However, it leaves out the corporate part of the contribution or double the actual amount I "contributed"

When one brings up 401k plans, the socialists keep bringing up "risky", "playing the market" and other terms that imply one will lose everything. I think there are ways to alleviate those concerns, but I also think that every liberal fears the general population having an equity interest in corporate America.

- All contributions will be fully excludable from federal income taxes.
- People would be able to invest in variety of products that are risk appropriate for their overall level of savings, age and stage in life.
- Parents could begin to contribute for their children from birth. Every person would have an account associated with them that follows them for life
- Corporations and individuals can make voluntary contributions to these plans
- Traditional pension plans will be phased out.
- As accounts reach certain thresholds, people will be able to utilize more discretion in their investments
- The government will not manage these funds or accounts.
