Although I do think computer architecture is progressing at a reasonable pace, the proliferation of knockoff languages adds nothing of real value to the science. Software development today is more about well-developed libraries than it is about languages. While I'm no fan of Objective C the language, the associated frameworks are wonderful and allow fast development of rich software without writing much code, which permits developers to spend their time thinking about functionality rather than implementation details.
