The companies will work with hardware manufacturers to make personal computers and equipment asymmetric digital subscriber line, or ADSL, compatible. Ameritech also will package Ameritech.net with Microsoft Internet Explorer and with software designed to simplify ADSL installation.

The service will let users download materials from the Internet as fast as 1.5 megabits per second and send materials as fast as 128 kilobits per second, the company said.

Ameritech initially is offering the service in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Ameritech.net service will be $59.95 a month, plus a one-time $150 installation charge. Through 1998, Ameritech is offering memberships for $49.95 a month and waiving the $199 cost of the modem.
