It isn't a Ponzi scheme. Other than that, you have a point...

Here is the problem. People get old. Before SSI, people mainly relied on their children and other relatives when they couldn't work any more. If you didn't have any relatives, you were screwed.

If you want to cut SSI, Medicare and Medicaid then what do you replace it with? How should nursing homes be paid for? Is it really wise to force productive people into bankruptcy because their parents didn't die soon enough?

At 82, my dad still works. But his trade is one that isn't physically taxing and he is in good health. Of course, Medicare helps. Given that he now specializes in Rolex repair, he doesn't have to work all that much to support his and my mom's lifestyle. But that isn't everyone. Not by a long shot. A friend of mine is taking care of her elderly parents. Her dad recently passed at age 98. He had wet AMD and dementia. She essentially shut her business down because providing care for her dad was so time consuming. She does medical laser safety training and has to travel a lot. When her dad knocked the faucet off of the bath tub and badly scalded himself, she spent 18 hours a day for 4 weeks before he passed. Then, right after the funeral, she did the same for one of her parents neighbors for 3 weeks before he passed.

These things happen. It would place an enormous burden on working people without these programs. Until we start issuing birth certificates with expiration dates, it is only going to get worse.

But, hey! Anything to get a tax break!
