It was a fundamental mistake with the program, from the outset, to assume that US Govt debt would always be the best investment vehicle. GWB tried to begin changing that and even his own party wouldn't hear of it because of the political drubbing they would have taken. And the Dems were livid, claiming it was some kind of "Wall Street Payoff." The reality was that it was a sound approach to solving the problem.

Today, US Government debt isn't worth a damn, regardless of what S&P and others say. There is no way all these commitments are going to be met and everyone knows it.
