Not really. What brought about this "spying on everyone" was the fact that we can. But now we have the internet.

Yes. But he's also just drunk the Kool-Aid of the culture that has always thought that the way to keep America safe is by spying on everyone, or those that feel like there's no way that's politically feasible to stop those who do. I'm not sure which Obama falls into, but both are stupid. But to his credit (at least relatively speaking, he doesn't also feel that part of keeping America safe is killing hundreds of thousands of other people (other than the white male conservatives he's rounded up in FEMA camps and is figuring out how to exterminate).
