One of the keys to having power in a divided nation is to allow some dissent in the ranks. Reid threatened anyone voting for defunding ObamaCare with no pork and no power. He is crazy enough people took him seriously. McConnell is a bona fide member of the liberal wing of the Republican party. He was never going to pay more than lip service to what Republican constituents want.

Republicans need a few liberals from places like Maine, Ohio. Louisiana and Pennsylvania to get the majority. Democrats need a few moderates from places like the Dakotas, Iowa, and other Conservative states to keep power. The key is that Republicans seldom discipline liberals in their ranks and democrats are very intolerant of dissent.
