Affirmative Action and welfare have done more to damage the black culture than slavery did. The liberal response to their guilt over slavery has reinforced a cultural sense of victimhood or helplessness. That sense of victimhood is the sickness in the black culture. But the results of this sense of victimhood can be seen in any race and in individuals, families, communities and sub-cultures.
The common thread that ties the things that we see in the black culture to native americans, to poor whites and many others, is the sense that they are victims and don't have any control over their lives. Programs that encourage them to live off of the government or to get special treatment in schools or workplace only enhance that sense that they are inferior and can't do it on their own.
You will see a common thread in any individual or group that identifies itself as a victim: aggression, self destructive behavior (drugs, alcohol, etc) and a sense of entitlement. Feed into any one of those and it enhances the sense of victimhood. Which in turn causes more of the negative behavior.
Everything that liberals have done through government mandate to assuage their perceived guilt over slavery (or the various crimes against native americans) has had the exact opposite of the intended effect. Giving someone a job that they are not qualified for does not empower that person. Creating a job that has no productive value so that you can employ someone, does not empower anyone. Giving someone money they have not earned does not empower them.
Most parents know that if they have an adult child who is still at home, not going to school, not working, doing drugs, getting in fights, you don't keep on giving them money, food and a place to stay. That enables the bad behavior (note the parallel to a sense of entitlement). Tough love time. Time to tell junior he has a month to find a new place to live.
If the goal of the liberal programs for the minorities was to pay for the guilt of crime against a race of people, even though nobody alive today in the U.S. had slaves and no black person alive today in the U.S. was a slave, well.....debt paid.
If the goal is to end the self destructive cycle in the black community, then the answer is to first quit enabling it through entitlements. The entitlement programs not only reinforce the sense of victimhood, they also encourage the destruction of the family unit. Which of course has many negative ramifications. The second is to remove obstacles to advancement where they exist. A key obstacle is education. Sure, leave the public schools in place. That's a state matter anyway. But remove any impediment to competition to the public schools. Let the private schools go in there and offer a better product at a better price. A law that encouraged this competition would state that people who are paying for private schooling do not also have to pay for the public schools at the same time.
But you would only do those things if the goal was to end the self destructive cycle in the black community. But it is clear now that a black community that views itself and acts as a cohesive victim organism, is very good for the political group that feeds into the addictions of that organism. On a political level, democrats are the drug dealers to the black culture. The only difference is that they are worse. |
