We had a societal understanding that house prices could never crater the way they did, and that owning a house was something that everyone was supposed to do, and it was pushed and pushed and pushed by the banks. Remember the "ownership society?"

Think about that "societal understanding." Who was responsible for pushing that lie? The bankers? Of course they were, but it's not just them.

Ultimately we were all responsible. How many times have you heard someone suggest, "You should buy a house now before real estate goes up even more"? Did that person make the suggestion because of some grand conspiracy by the banks to push a lie? Of course not.

Most of us genuinely believed that real estate would go nowhere but up, especially since you can't make more land. Then when all of that came crashing down, fingers get pointed, and the easy targets are the ones that we claim should have protected us from ourselves.

But no one can protect us from ourselves. Even those who claim to be doing just that are using us to further their own political careers. Maybe in the process they come up with something that will ensure we don't fool ourselves again, but all of that is only crafted with the benefit of hindsight.

Bottom line is that the next time you claim that we were all lied to, I humbly ask you to figure out exactly who was lying to us. Or if you can't get past the easy answer, I humbly ask you to figure out who's job it is to protect us from said lies.
