| | | Elmo, Germans, Swiss, Austrians and even Czechs take pride in their workmanship, and profession or the product they make are more expensive but more reliable. Wood or Metal processing machines more precise solid and last for a long time. When I was traveling to Germany, the younger people did not run to be attorneys or MBA on WS this is not their dream. To be an excellent craftsman was their pride.
When I had my small factory with 20 people I know that all I bought from Germany, Switzerland from switches to winding machines to anything else was of higher quality and more expensive.
Bought a batch of cheaper switches from US they did not last long had returns because of them after 3 to 4 years later. Similar issues with other electronic items. Audio chips from Siemens made no problems cheaper IC form Motorola where not consistent in performance (this was in 1974 to 1980).
Copper wire winding machines where first class was able to sell them even after 12 years for 60% of list value, Italian copper wire winding machine at much lower price but no worker was willing to work on them for precise work, so it was set aside for rudimentary work where precision was not important after 10 years it was not salable.
This reflected in most of their products at the time 30 years ago when I dealt with them. Unfortunate the consumer would not value the quality all the time and not willing to pay a higher price.
The US is geared to ward cheap products that fulfill the need for a short period of time few years, Germans, Swiss, Austrians and even Czechs products are manufactured with the goal to last a generation.
that is the reason that consumer do not need buying anew same thing every 5 to 8 years, At the time a BMW or MEBE lasted at least twice as much as a US made car, and price depreciation for a used car was accordingly. |
