We're starting the process of finding the proper stove. Haven't gone to any stores yet, but will visit a few this weekend. We heated that way for yrs, and I got pretty tired of the mess.......and bugs...........but because we have plenty of standing wood, it makes sense.

I believe ashes are excellent for enhancing garden soil, but would have to do a bit more research to verify.

I have a little orange backpack where I store such useful items as the matches you described. It also includes a small solar blanket, first aid kit, sewing kit, swiss type army knife, a whistle and a P38 can opener that MM gave me.
