I've seen claims like this a couple of times now. AFAIK, the policies cancel on Dec 31, and new ones compliant to ACA must be in place on Jan 1. The grandfathered plans that insurers keep (and keeping them is their discretion) require that you have been a member prior to 2010. But it sounds like some people can buy a years policy now and have it in effect through 2014. I need to look into that.
