Janet Napolitano pledges $5M for illegal immigrants at California college

Janet Napolitano, the president of the University of California, announced this week the college would give out $5 million for illegal immigrants to obtain special counseling and financial aid.

The New York Times reported that the announcement came as a way of calming her critics — those who thought she was going to crack down on the university’s illegal immigration population.

Ms. Napolitano used to head the Department of Homeland Security. About a month ago, she took over presidential duties at the university, which spans 10 campuses and has a small but growing immigrant population.

She announced the $5 million initiative in San Francisco on Wednesday, while delivering her first public remarks as university president, The Times said. During her speech, Ms. Napolitano also vowed to give $10 million for the recruitment and training of graduate students and those who want to pursue fellowships in research.
