Heresy was punished, especially if the heretic was a priest as it seems most of them were. However you can't name a single person put to death over a scientific issue.

BTW, did you know ancient Greek Pythagoreans drowned the mathemetician Hippasus for publicizing the square root of 2. It offended their religious ideas about numbers.
