Since Greg tried fruitlessly to get some indication from our new owner "Craig" what they have in mind for the site, it seems there are only a few explanations for his stone-faced silence (let's be honest, he didn't write the ad announcement that went out under his name, a staffer obviously did).

1. He has no real interest in dealing with the site, and bought it with the idea that others would make some new success happen. But it doesn't make sense that someone would lay out a chunk of cash (probably very low 6 figures) without a broad plan that could be enunciated. And leaving the site's leadership up to two well-meaning but obviously unqualified desk jockeys makes no sense if Craig expects any return on investment.

Would you invest that much in a site and not be ready to spend more on the right execution to make it a profit center?

2. There is still a big plan to come hiding in the wings. Really? That makes even less sense after nine months of ownership. New owners and CEO's want to put their stamp on a company right away and start the dynamic growth initiatives that will make their tenure a success. Even if they are still keeping a big plan under wraps, the new CEO would lay the foundations for change by engaging the members of the site and building a new image.

Instead we get silence.

3. Craig bought the site as a favor to Brad (which makes no sense because Brad didn't need the money but did apparently want to to dump the site) and hoped he could run it on the cheap and turn a profit with ads, and keeping his overhead and marketing low. So there is no professional Twitter feed, no mobile app. A news search for SI turns up ZERO hits on Google. Under this scenario, Craig will keep the lights on until the cash bleed gets on his nerves, then he will look for someone else to dump it to. Which he probably won't find.

Thoughts welcome.
