I don't think we know much yet about our evolution. We are just guessing. But my guess is that we thought first, and invented religion afterwards. I think we started burying our dead to keep wild animals away and then it became a ritual in the evolutionary sense that it protected the tribe. Other aspects of religion where making stuff up to answer questions we didn't know about. The line between reality and fantasy barely existed. Go look at any primitive religion and see the things they believe. They just made up stuff. Witch doctors and spirit people made all sorts of shit up. Once science got a foot hold in the 1800's and we could prove or disprove stuff. We started to build a reality based society. Today they are called liberals-lol.
