The basic constructs of a society are trust and compassion. Trusting your fellow family members, tribesmen, citizens, etc allows your to plan for your future and work cooperatively. Compassion and gratefulness allow you to win trustworthy allies. all things being equal (or even somewhat unequal) the social group that has more of these factors wins.

I don't think it is a coincident that the only branch of humanoids to survive was the one that believed in afterlife, took care of its elderly, and had altruism. Aside from trying to make sense of the unknown world, religions have always taken on the task of formulating rules of social conduct: Do bad deeds (breach of trust) and burn in Hell - Do good deeds (compassion and gratefulness) and go to Heaven. Primitive as it may be, these beliefs foster the key ingredient of a successful society. Religion becomes a net negative when it is used for holy wars, but that came much much later in our evolution.

I'd love to hash this out with you further, but I am going to drop off SI again soon. I only hope that I made my reasoning clear. It is up to you to how much you agree with it.

cheers,
ST
