Here's a thought for y'all on the ability of Sparq to compete with Zip

Zip disc costs $10-$17
Sparq disc costs $33-$39

Now, I know they have different capacities. However, I was in a CompUsa a little while ago and started to talk to someone buying a Zip drive. He told me that he was choosing Zip because Syquest discs were too expensive.

Have you guys ever thought about this? OEMs will NEVER put a Sparq as standard equipment in computers. Most people won't plunk down $30 for a disc.

As for Zip discs, it is commonplace to find them for $10 a piece these days. Look for Iomega to drop the prices down gradually over time. As they do this, the price difference between Zips and Sparqs will increase (as no doubt Syquest will not be able to lower the $33 price anytime in the near future).

So, while Sparq might be a good product and a good value (I don't know, I don't own one), what makes you think that they'll find a mass market audience for it?

They won't. That is why Zip will continue to dominate, even if Sparq gives you more speed and disc space for the money.

Anyway, we'll find out soon enough, won't we?
