>> All I said was that I thought consciousness came first and religion second. I thought you said it was the other way around?

It was a circular process and it doesn't matter which came first. If it makes you happier, say empathy and trustworthiness (in small amounts) came first. Those who had it invented a primitive religion. Adherents of that religion managed to prevail over others with the help of their "god" (something that I attribute to better social cohesion and brain than the "god"). This in turn selected for the "god" gene and it spread more...which led to more social cohesion and stronger religious beliefs...which led to those communities prevailing more often, which...I think you get the picture.

Others have pointed out that shamen were the first to create food silos allowing their societies to create an administrative class and prospering.

Evolution is not a straight line and is very complex. Religious beliefs played a strong part in it.

>> I am saying we should employ science now to solve our social problems.

I tend to agree. But I don't think everyone in our society is ready for that yet. Meaning that their genetic makeup dose not allow them to buy into a purely scientific methodology. They need the emotional and mystic appeal of religion. So the society as a whole has to find a way to cater to both camps.
