Ok.....from the top:

Nixon is before my time - I think I was 7 when he left office. I'd like to say that I was dialed into politics but I'm pretty sure Bert, Ernie and Gilligan's Island ruled the day (at least for me).

Ronald Reagan is an example of a Prez. that was able to logically present and sell an idea and hope to the American people at a time when things weren't so great. Those ideas resulted in solutions and we prospered. He was so gifted in his presentation skills that he won over the American people to the extent that democrats were forced to start vote with him on many of his initiatives.

Bush 1 lacked the ability to present but he was a smart man that deserved a 2nd term. The economy slipped a little but many of his economic policies rippled throughout the 90's and set the stage for a fantastic continuation of the run started in 1983 - '84.
  • Greenspan is vilified now but he was making all the right moves in the early 90's.
  • Our action in Iraq was brilliant. Bush had an exit plan that was in lock step with the UN resolution and he followed it. Shortly after I believe oil prices went to about 12-15 per barrel (I'm not going to google it) but it was a huge benefit.
  • He didn't engage in attacking politics and yes - he lost. That said, I have nothing but respect and admiration for Bush. He was an intellectual statesman - we should be so lucky today on both sides of the aisle.
<<What kind of "antics" are you talking about?>>

What I'm talking about are things like pitbull politics and shutting down the Govt. I think those are going to hurt us (time will tell). Political cage fighting makes for interesting TV but I respect logic and measured diplomacy far more.

<<I'm not at all worried about losing the House in '14. In fact I think we stand a very good chance of taking the Senate also. Obama and his constant lying has done more to damage the dem image than anything................including his critics>>

I'm very concerned about it. You're right - we've been lied to. The problem is Obama has been very slippery and has been rewarded for it. My fear is that short of an epic failure with Obamacare the perceived conduct of the Republican party could cost us at a time when Obama's approval ratings are low and sinking further.

<<It's a shame isn't it? Image matters more than experience and competence.>>

Yeah....but it's part of the game. Beyond that I think we can have all of the above with the right people in place and the correct tone. The political discourse we have right now (both sides) isn't working. Things aren't getting better - they're getting worse. The economic numbers we're being fed are lies. I'd like to see the republicans take back the high ground by calling off the dogs and presenting well thought out ideas in a diplomatic way. Once Obamacare fails and he's exposed we say to the voters "we tabled alternatives but we need your support to right the course." I think it's potentially the winning hand.

<<IYO what should the repub image look like?>>

Before I answer that I want to give you names of people I thought represented the republican ideals and image well. William F. Buckley, George Will & Steve Forbes. There are many others but the way they handled themselves is how I believe we should handle ourselves today.

Now for the Answer - Mitt Romney was very close. He was the better choice in '12, he was measured, smart and a business man. Some say he was soft or weak - I disagree. He was principled and IMO - the BEST republican candidate we've had since Bush 1.
