Bernanke had to replace bad endogenous leverage with replacement leverage direct from the Fed to prevent a repeat of 1929.

That's what an economic depression is - the sudden realization that much of your capital was vaporized in preceding period of malinvestment.

I think most preferred Bernanke's 1929 alternative.
