Sure, I agree with all of that, but the problem is detailed numbers are not easy to come by, and what we need are the details along with updates showing if the details are tracking close to projections or not.

I did read the CBO projections at one point. Those are the numbers that the media should be frequently referencing, rather than all the handwaving about individual "winners" and "losers".

BTW, I agree wrt to the maternity issue, with one caveat: Gender is not one of the inputs, so the only way insurers can factor that one in or out is on age AFAIK, and I'm sure they do use age extensively in their cost estimations and hence premium quotes. I did a little playing around, and for me, the quote changes for every year of age. Other than smoking and zip code, the Oregon exchange doesn't have any additional info on which to pool people. So that is a huge change for the insurance companies, and it will take awhile for them to work out models which allow them to compete on price.
