They seem to be arguing its driven solely by the mental state you have in your head when you exchange a $ for something. AFAIK, an economy can work without $'s. It could also function with technological stasis. Its just that in both cases it makes things a bit more difficult. Lacking either does not preclude growth. You can have growth or contraction simply by working or not working, and it can happen in a purely barter economy.
