I'd like to see some references that suggests that this is a common view. The primary driver of economic expansion is really boring...it's simply more people entering the workforce who create or contribute to the creation of good and services that others are willing to trade for symbolic representations of little time slices of their life (money).

innovation may cause spikes in economic expansion, but those get normalized rather quickly.
